How to use a separatory funnel

There is a piston on the neck of the separatory funnel, which is an important reason why it is different from ordinary funnels and long-necked funnels, because the necks of ordinary funnels and long-necked funnels do not have a piston, so they cannot flexibly control the liquid. Before using the separatory funnel, take out the cock core on the funnel neck and apply Vaseline, but not too much, so as not to block the flow hole. Insert the separatory funnel into the plug groove and turn it to make the oil film even and transparent, and rotate freely. Then close the cock, pour water into the funnel, check whether there is water leakage at the cock, and use the separatory funnel that does not leak. The amount of liquid added to the funnel should not exceed 3/4 of the volume. And it is not suitable for alkaline liquid. To prevent impurities from falling into the funnel, the stopper on the mouth of the funnel should be covered. When in use, hold the funnel ball with the tiger's mouth in the left hand, and use the thumb and index finger to turn the piston to control the addition of liquid. At this time, the small groove of the glass stopper must be aligned with the small hole on the side of the funnel mouth, so that the liquid addition can be carried out smoothly.

When the liquid in the separatory funnel flows down, the piston can control the flow of the liquid. If the reaction is to be terminated, the piston must be tightly closed, so the dripping of the liquid can be stopped immediately. When discharging the liquid, the groove on the grinding plug should be aligned with the small hole on the neck of the funnel. At this time, the air inside and outside the funnel is connected and the pressure is equal, so that the liquid in the funnel can flow out smoothly. During liquid separation, according to the principle of "downflow and upside down", open the piston to let all the liquid in the lower layer flow out, and close the piston. The top layer is poured out from the top. Separation funnels cannot be heated. Wash the funnel after use. For separatory funnels that have not been used for a long time, the cock should be cleaned, a piece of paper should be placed between the plug core and the plug groove, and a rubber band should be used to cover the piston to prevent the frosted parts from sticking.
