Precautions for the use of measuring cylinders

Mar 25, 2022

1. Cannot be used as a reaction vessel

2. Can not be heated

After we wash things, we like to put them in the oven to dry, but the measuring cylinder is a glassware, and heating will deform it, which will affect its accuracy. Especially repeated long-term heating, high temperature heating.

3. Can not dilute concentrated acid and concentrated alkali

Especially corrosive liquids. In addition, although glass is an inert material, it is not without activity. Certain strong acids and bases, especially strong bases, can still corrode it. Therefore, long-term storage or long-term use of graduated cylinders is also inaccurate.

4. Cannot store medicines

A graduated cylinder is a measuring device, not a container, and is not suitable for storing liquids.

5. Incapable of taking heat solution

Inaccurate if measuring hot or cold liquids.

6. Can not be cleaned with decontamination powder to avoid scratching the scale

The measuring cylinder is not allowed to be brushed, because brushing will wear the inner wall of the measuring cylinder, causing the content of the measuring cylinder to change, thus affecting the accuracy of the measuring cylinder. But several laboratory graduated cylinders have not been brushed.

7. No rinsing

Sometimes after pouring, we find that there are many hanging walls in the measuring cylinder, and we feel that the amount poured is not enough, and we use solvent or other means to repeatedly rinse. In fact, this is not correct, because the design of the measuring cylinder has taken into account the wall hanging of the measuring cylinder, and this part of the volume is taken into account, and the volume poured out is the volume we need.
